How collection works
The Town of Oyster Bay's Department of Sanitary Collection Services picks up garbage and oversees the collection of recyclables and yard waste; the Sanitation Collection line is (516) 677-5848. Not every home in the Town is on Town collection: the Town's 2020 Local Solid Waste Management Plan says 16 incorporated villages and the communities of the Glenwood-Glen Head Garbage District have withdrawn from its Solid Waste Disposal District, that the Glenwood-Glen Head and Syosset districts use private carters, and that parts of East Norwich, Glen Head, Greenvale and Massapequa are served by private carters.
Under the Town's Sanitation Collection Regulations, garbage and rubbish are collected twice a week, and recyclables are collected on your recycling day.
Put garbage at the curb, not in the roadway, no earlier than 5 p.m. the evening before your scheduled collection, in pails of 32 gallons or less or in plastic bags; the Town does not service larger pails, pails with attached lids, or containers designed for mechanical collection.
The Town's recycling program serves homes in the Town of Oyster Bay Solid Waste Disposal District and the Villages of Farmingdale and Massapequa Park.
There is no sanitation or recycling collection on New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas when the holiday falls on a regular collection day. When the holiday falls on a Monday, Monday collection is made on Tuesday and Tuesday collection on Wednesday; on a Tuesday, Tuesday collection is made on Wednesday; on a Thursday, Thursday collection is made on Friday and Friday collection on Saturday; on a Friday, all collections are made on Saturday. Regular collection is made on Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Columbus Day, Election Day, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
