Downey runs on most holidays, and names the short list that changes. The city's published rule: Athens Services observes New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. When a holiday stops trash collection, the City says it is made up: trash is collected the day after the normal collection day for the rest of that week, so Friday's trash is collected on Saturday. A holiday on a Saturday or Sunday delays nothing.

The dates below are the federal holidays left this year, with what the rule means for each if Downey observes it. The city's own calendar governs which holidays it observes.

The City of Downey's trash pickup schedule and area map divides the city into five areas, one for each weekday from Monday to Friday; the lookup reads the area for your address.

Trash is collected weekly. Athens Services collects for the City under an exclusive franchise. The map is the City's Department of Public Works map of 2020, drawn when CalMet held the franchise; when Athens took it over in 2022, it said collection routes would remain the same. An address near a line between two days' areas, or in land the map leaves unpainted, gets no day rather than a guess. Elsewhere the map answers any point in an area, so the day is for residential curbside service: apartment complexes and businesses on bin service have their own schedules.
